Nearly all interior ministry services will require ID cards from November 22 (11 November 2009)
All Interior Ministry services, except visa renewal, will soon require ID cards issued by the Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA), officials have said.
As the first step, from November 22, residents of Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain — both nationals and expatriates — will need to produce the ID card to complete Interior Ministry services such as vehicle registration, and renewal. No applications will be accepted by the concerned departments in the absence of ID cards.
Expatriates in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah are exempt from the decision for now. Authorities are finalising the decision for expatriates in these three emirates, and it is expected to be announced shortly.
The ministry has called on all members of the public to register and complete procedures to obtain the ID cards at the earliest to avoid inconveniences.
According to official sources, apart from being unable to avail certain government transactions, no further fines will be issued, at least for the time being.
The Law of Population Register and Identity Card makes it obligatory for all citizens and residents of the UAE above the age of 15 to obtain the ID card for identification in various transactions. EIDA is coordinating with the Ministry of Finance to integrate its e-dirham into the ID card. The authority has also partnered with the Ministry of Interior to allow the use of the ID cards at e-gates at airports across the country.
Once all nationals and expatriates have ID cards, its scope will be expanded to include data for other services like health and labour cards, and drivers licenses.
